Adelaide street east residence

Adelaide Street East Residence is a comprehensive renovation of a classic Art Deco home, located on one of Brisbane’s most established and tightly held residential streets.

The project is grounded in a clear architectural intent: to retain and elevate the defining qualities of the original home while carefully reworking it to support contemporary living. The existing structure is characterised by strong Art Deco elements, including decorative ceilings, bay windows, and hardwood flooring, all of which have been preserved and refined as part of the design.

Rather than imposing a new architectural language, the approach is one of alignment and restraint. The internal planning has been reconfigured to introduce a more open and connected living environment, improving flow between spaces while maintaining the proportion and rhythm that define the original house. This allows the home to function more fluidly without compromising its character.

New interventions are deliberately resolved to sit within the existing architectural framework. Material selection and detailing draw on the richness of the Art Deco style, with elements such as marble, leadlight glazing, and custom finishes integrated in a way that feels cohesive and considered rather than decorative or applied. The result is a consistent material language that reinforces the identity of the home.

Externally, additions including a new deck and a traditionally detailed carport are carefully composed to maintain the scale, rooflines, and visual balance of the original structure. These elements extend the functionality of the home while remaining secondary to the existing building.

The project required a high level of coordination, with George Kouparitsas Architects overseeing the design from initial concept through approvals, detailed documentation, and construction. This continuity ensured that both architectural intent and execution were maintained throughout.

Adelaide Street East Residence reflects a disciplined approach to working with significant character homes, where judgement, proportion, and material understanding are prioritised to create a home that feels both enduring and resolved.
