Madden street, albion

Madden Street is a considered renovation and extension of an iconic inner-city Art Deco residence, balancing preservation with contemporary family living.

The project transforms the original single-storey home into a substantial two-storey dwelling, responding to the needs of a growing family while retaining the character and identity of the existing structure. The design carefully negotiates the relationship between old and new, allowing the home to evolve without losing its architectural integrity.

A key driver of the project is outlook. The extension is positioned to capture expansive views of the Brisbane city skyline, with living spaces oriented to engage directly with this condition. Openings are strategically placed to draw light deep into the plan while framing views and maintaining privacy.

The architectural approach respects the defining qualities of the original Art Deco home. Existing elements are retained and refined, with characteristic geometry, proportion, and detailing informing the design of the new work. Rather than replicating the past, the extension adopts a complementary language, allowing the original structure to remain legible within the overall composition.

Internally, the home is organised to support both openness and separation. New living areas and additional bedrooms are integrated into a clear and intuitive plan, ensuring functionality without compromising spatial clarity.

Madden Street reflects a measured approach to heritage transformation, where contemporary intervention is balanced with a deep respect for the architectural qualities of the existing home.
