MOSCONI RESTAURANT & bar EXPANSION

George Kouparitsas Architects oversaw the architectural design of iconic eatery, Mosconi, which occupies an historic World War II igloo in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley.

The brief for this project was to add flexible space to cater for the restaurant’s growing clientele - whilst remaining true to the Mosconi vision of providing guests with a unique and world-class dining experience in a cosy, refined and historic space.

Together with By Burke Interior Design and the restaurant’s owner, Mark Rotolone, George Kouparitsas Architects delivered a timeless commercial restaurant and bar design that caters for Mosconi’s current needs and future growth.

New dining spaces and utility areas were added, including creatively using an existing mezzanine level, which allows the restaurant to serve guests both seated in an à la carte setting or at open plan functions.

The heritage of the building was retained through preserving existing features and introducing new design elements, such as double-story arched ceilings, luxe leather booth seating, statement crystal chandeliers, brick feature walls, marble bathroom and mosaic tile floors.

Today, Mosconi stands as a chic two-level European wine bar and restaurant. New life has been breathed into the existing building, with the expansion seeing the restaurant occupy two of three World War II surplus buildings. Mosconi is now often referred to as “one of Brisbane’s most unique and charming venues”. It was a privilege to work on this project.
