RED HILL renovation + EXTENSION
Red Hill is a considered renovation and extension of a traditional Queenslander, shaped by a deep respect for the original home and a disciplined approach to contemporary intervention.
Set within one of Brisbane’s established inner-city suburbs, the project required a careful balance between preservation and evolution. The existing house is retained and refined, with its defining proportions, detailing, and street presence maintained as the foundation of the design.
The extension is deliberately restrained. Rather than competing with the original structure, the new work is positioned to sit quietly behind, allowing the character of the Queenslander to remain primary. The transition between old and new is resolved through proportion, alignment, and material continuity, ensuring a cohesive and legible outcome.
A key focus of the project is the reorganisation of internal spaces to support contemporary living while respecting the logic of the original home. Living areas are opened and connected to outdoor spaces, introducing light and ventilation without compromising the integrity of the existing structure.
Material selection and detailing are handled with precision. Traditional elements are retained and restored where possible, while new insertions are expressed with clarity and restraint. This approach avoids imitation, instead allowing the architecture to evolve in a way that feels both appropriate and enduring.
Red Hill reflects a measured and respectful approach to working with Queenslanders, where judgement, restraint, and understanding of context are prioritised over overt expression.
